Antecantamentum - Saturnine December

*Saturnine December* is the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of writing, near tragedy, and perseverance. Created by Melpomenë, the sole member of the one-person black metal project Antecantamentum, this album has a backstory as dramatic as the music itself. Initially caught in the chaos of a house fire that consumed many of Melpomenë’s instruments, the music managed to survive, stored on hard drives that emerged intact. Even after losing her home, Melpomenë finished this labor of love while moving between places, giving this album a raw, deeply personal quality that both shines and falters at times.

The album blends a variety of black metal subgenres, leaning into melodic black metal with both blissful blackgaze moments and sharper-edged melodic black metal. At the same time, *Saturnine December* isn’t afraid to experiment, pulling in elements from other styles—such as the Gothenburg-inspired riffs in “In The Green Petrichor,” dissonant tech-death in the title track, and the post-metal moods throughout. The complexity of these shifts gives the album a progressive edge, nodding towards bands like Opeth, with long, winding songs that offer atmospheric depth and evolving melodies. However, the experimental nature also brings in some of the album's rougher edges, where transitions can feel abrupt and disjointed.

Some of these less polished transitions may be a product of the difficult conditions in which the album was finished. A striking example is found in the title track “Saturnine December,” where a tech-death passage suddenly appears and vanishes without much context. Similarly, in “Luna Cadens,” a melancholic atmospheric black metal section is interrupted by an out-of-place piano snippet that seems disconnected. While these moments don’t ruin the experience, they occasionally break the flow and make certain compositions feel less cohesive.

That said, *Saturnine December* thrives in its high-caliber material, especially in the latter half of the album. “Valley Of Deathly Reveries” takes listeners on a journey from contemplative quiet to an intense, nearly suffocating assault, only to close with an unexpected, ethereal melodic passage. “Wraith,” the shortest of the final four tracks, balances clean guitar passages with a persistent undercurrent of blast beats, reminiscent of Alcest’s lighter moments but with a more biting edge.

For me, the album’s standout track is “Luna Cadens.” Channeling the atmospheric complexity of mid-era Opeth, this song weaves through frenetic yet serene sections, balancing acoustic guitars and blackgaze passages with a deep emotional undercurrent. The song builds to a poignant, sorrowful climax that showcases Melpomenë's skill in crafting atmosphere and melody. The closing title track adds weight with the return of collaborator Kakophonix on cello, contrasting sinister, slower riffs with a thunderous, noisy crescendo that drives the album to a harsh, yet fitting conclusion.

Despite its imperfections, *Saturnine December* remains an admirable and creative work. The unrefined edges, while sometimes jarring, also reflect the emotional intensity and turbulent process behind its creation. There’s a raw passion behind the album that makes it easy to overlook its occasional flaws and appreciate it for the long-term passion project that it is. For those who can appreciate the earnestness of a deeply personal artistic endeavor, *Saturnine December* is well worth the listen.
