Endlhëtonëg

With *Endlhëtonëg*, Trhä returns to the profoundly immersive, ambient-laden style that defined the project's 2020 debut *Nvenlanëg*. This shift marks a noticeable pivot back toward the more expansive, atmospheric side of Damián Antón Ojeda’s creative output, after having focused more heavily on the black metal elements in his more recent releases. While *Nvenlanëg* was a clear homage to the cold, atmospheric black metal of Paysage d'Hiver, *Endlhëtonëg* takes the sound in a slightly different direction, mixing the same lo-fi black metal dirges and ambient stretches, but with a stronger sense of cohesion.

One of the most prominent features of this album is how Ojeda blends the black metal and ambient sections, often overlaying them on top of one another. Tracks like "Endlhëdëhaj" showcase this intertwining of the two styles, allowing the eerie, droning atmospheres to persist underneath the tremolo riffs and distant, distorted vocals. The result is a smoother, more fluid transition between movements, compared to the more jarring shifts found in earlier releases. Although Trhä has been criticized for not always tying its musical ideas together seamlessly, *Endlhëtonëg* is the project’s most successful attempt to create a cohesive listening experience thus far.

The album is heavily skewed toward ambient soundscapes, with nearly half of its 54-minute runtime dedicated to purely ambient tracks. This makes it feel like a true ambient black metal album, where the atmospheric elements take precedence, setting a contemplative, almost meditative mood. However, this focus on ambiance can also make the album difficult to engage with for extended periods. The black metal sections, while hypnotic and trance-inducing, are sparse, and the long stretches of ambient passages—such as the 10-minute "Endlhëturhën"—can blur together, requiring a specific mood to appreciate fully. As a result, the album often works better as background music, something to sink into passively rather than an album that demands active listening throughout.

The closing title track, "Endlhëtonëg," is a highlight, injecting dungeon synth motifs into its atmospheric black metal foundation. This track brings a triumphant and eerie tone to the album’s conclusion, echoing the project's earlier material and expanding on it with a richer, more textured sound. It’s a high point in an otherwise subdued and introspective record, and a reminder of Trhä's potential when balancing its various influences.

The album requires a patient listener, particularly one who appreciates the slow, atmospheric build-ups that dominate much of the material. Fans of Paysage d'Hiver or those who enjoy the more ambient side of atmospheric black metal will likely find themselves at home here, even if the album leans more toward ambiance than wintry aggression. It’s a challenging, mood-driven work that speaks to Trhä’s continued evolution, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor..
